The court ruled unanimously that officials can be deemed "state actors" when making use of social media and can therefore face litigation if they block or mute a member of the public. The court held that conduct on social media can be viewed as a state action when the official in question "possessed actual authority to speak on the state's behalf" and "purported to exercise that authority." While the officials in both cases have low profiles, the ruling will apply to all public officials who use social media to engage with the public. The cases raised the question of whether public officials' posts and other social media activity constitute part of their governmental functions. The court is wrestling with a whole series of social media-related free speech issues in its current term, which runs until June.

And with new plastic chemicals entering the market all the time, it’s been difficult for regulators and policy makers to determine the scope of the problem. Now, for the first time, researchers have pulled together scientific and regulatory data to develop a database of all known chemicals used in plastic production. It’s a staggering number: 16,000 plastic chemicals, with at least 4,200 of those considered to be “highly hazardous” to human health and the environment, according to the authors. Although grouping would capture about 1,000 of the most toxic chemicals in plastics, Wagner said, that still leaves about 2,600 chemicals that still need to be regulated. Missing hazard dataIn addition to the massive number of toxic chemicals, the report found that detailed hazard information is missing for more than 10,000 of the 16,000 chemicals.

Some of the United States’ biggest companies are in the hot seat to answer questions about the economy, and where it could be headed. Like the rest of the US, companies are watching whether the economy could still tip into a recession as interest rates hover around a 23-year high. The declines have come from just about every sector, with the exception of technology, which has seen its earnings estimates rise since October 1. A good example: IBM , which beat earnings expectations and highlighted an uptick in demand for artificial intelligence products and services. Outside of technology, earnings expectations are lower than three months ago, but are now rising again. "The market has been anticipating improving earnings expectations, and it's getting them. By that I do not mean that earnings estimates are rising, I mean they are not getting cut as much anymore," Raich added.

Netflix – The streaming stock popped nearly 13% after topping fourth-quarter revenue estimates and posting strong subscriber growth. Revenue topped expectations and AT & T added more subscribers than anticipated, but the company forecasted lower-than-expected adjusted earnings for 2024. The company guided for fourth-quarter revenue of $2.90 billion, under the $3 billion expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet. Abbott posted adjusted earnings that came in line with the consensus estimate of analysts polled by FactSet at $1.19 per share. The firm also told investors to anticipate full-year adjusted earnings between $4.50 and $4.70 per share, a range that includes the $4.63 per share analyst forecast.
